Zope (Z Object Publishing Environment)

Plone uses the Zope Application Server as a platform. Zope provides various basic and advanced services to applications built on top of it. Plone runs as an application on Zope and uses these services.
Zope is a next-generation Open Source application server and portal toolkit developed by Zope Corporation. It runs on nearly all UNIX platforms as well as Windows NT and can be used with most popular web servers or its own built in web server. Zope is written (and extensible) with a powerful object-oriented programming language, Python.
Zope comes with a built-in object database called ZODB(Zope Object Database).
The ZODB is an object-oriented database for transparently and persistently storing Python objects. It can store not only content and custom data, but also dynamic HTML templates, scripts, a search engine, and relational database (RDBMS) connections and code. It is included as part of the Zope web application server, but can also be used independently of Zope. Features of the ZODB include: transactions, history/undo, transparently pluggable storage, built-in caching, multi-version concurrency control (MVCC), and scalability across a network (using ZEO).
Python

Python is the language of Zope. Modifications to Zope or Plone tend to require python knowledge.
Python is an easy to learn, powerful programming language. It has efficient high-level data structures and a simple but effective approach to object-oriented programming. Python’s elegant syntax and dynamic typing, together with its interpreted nature, make it an ideal language for scripting and rapid application development in many areas on most platforms.
